Madagascar: Masoala Coral Gardens

Harmony amongst the coral: A pair of butterfly fish in sync.

The Masoala peninsula is home to a large proportion of the remaining hectars of Madagascar primary rain forest. It is refuge to such rare and strange species as the leaf-tailed gekko and the red-ruffed lemur. so much I knew and so I was stoked for my first visit to that ecosystem. What I didn't know is that Masoala is also home to spectacular coral reefs, the likes of which I have not seen.

Masoala is where the forest meets the sea.

As long as I can remember, beach and sea have been the elements where I feel most at home. Whether during holdidays in France as child, as student of marine ecology in South Africa, dive master in Egypt or traveler in the Carribean or the Indo-Pacific, I found again and again that I just feel great with lots of water over and lots of sea creatures around me. I have dived with big fish, I have dived wrecks and caves, at night and with zero visibility - and I thought I had more or less seen it all.

However, I was ill prepared for snorkling the Masoala. The pristine beauty and sheer untouchedness of this place are simply astonishing. The corals are obviuosly in strong and healthy conditions, I found no traces of bleaching or broken corals, or other damage. Instead, I swam through mystifying seascapes that seemed to stem directly from the early diverpioneers descriptions of Hans Hass and Jaques Cousteau that I had gobbled up as a teenager. Corals, corals corals of all types and forms growing over and on top of each other, with intermittant sponges and giant clams thrown in. Add to that an abundance in fish and other life forms of which I had heard, but never seen, and the occasional turtle, and you get only a glimpse of an idea of what it was like.

E. O. Wilson made the term 'biophilia' popular for describing the experience and healthiness of enjoying the company of living things. I came out of the Masoala waters thinking I would like to take that to the next level and define 'ecophilia' - as the sheer joy of finding and experiencing a spot in nature that still seems absolutely healthy.

Colourful clams: Tridacna can be found in abundnace.

Corals, corals, more corals, sponges, anemone, clown fish, corals. And a thousand other things.

Here, HE is king: Lionfish exude that calm self-confidence onyl potentially deadly animals have.

Tropical sandwhich: sea, fish and coral.

Nudibranch freaks will have a feast: Only one of numerous colourful specimen.

Always a nice shot: Rhizostomae medusa from below.

Decidedly territorial, this Emperorfish was not put off by excessive photography on my part.

A blue spotted stingray chillaxing under some corals. Nice place for a snooze, I must admit.

Wall-sponges of enormous proportions find spots between the coral blocks.

A Fungia coral displaying its tentacle. This is actually a single polyp, despite being the size of a dinner plate, and the only mobile coral.

Always a beauty: a Nephtheid soft coral all contracted and curled up for sleeping through the day.

A colony of brigth orange anemone add yet another splash of colour.

Madagascar: Paradise

The Maroantsetra Airport is an experience in itself: Checking in.

Untouched primary rain forest on rolling hills that gently slope to a warm turqouise sea, raucous calls of red-ruffed lemurs and the gentle drone of the cicadas, empty sandy beaches dotted with boulders from a giants' playground, a healthy coral reef teeming with life – and amongst it all, a secluded spot, where a few tented huts have been put up, a few kajaks that silently split the sea, a footpath that leads into the mountains. No power grid, no mobile reception. Spending time at the Masoala Lodge is eco-tourism that lives up to the name – and an unforgettable experience. Yet for me, the beauty of the location immediately triggered a traveler's dilemma.

If you found Paradise, would you tell everyone how to get there? Probably not, for the very absence of humans, or at least of human impact, is the recipe for keeping it heavenly. Those places where you can experience what this planet would look like if it wasn't for us are getting extremely rare. Thailand, Sinai, Goa, Morocco... place names that once stood for individual travelling have lost their magic to the cheap and glitz of hotels and tour operators. And even the most remote beaches or mountain tops will carry the plastic litter of our age. So do I tell people about the wonderful things I have seen and experienced and thereby contribute to the process? Or do I keep my mouth shut, and somebody else will blurt it all out?

Monster en miniature: The leaf-tailed gekko Uroplatus.

Madagascar as a whole is prime example of how humans mess up their environment – deforestation and erosion have sculpted the landscape of the highlands, where once were lush forests, bare earth now bakes in the sun as far as the eye can see. In a process that took him not even 2000 years, man has stripped the land and made it inhospitable even to himself. But an speck of primary rain forest remains on the Masoala peninsula, protected from the onslaught by National Park status, and unfit for mass tourism by its sheer remoteness: it takes an international and then a domestic flight, a taxi and a 3 hour boat ride to get you to the gates.

Home of the clownfish: Amphiprion couple with host anemone.

Still, looking at the way the world turns, distances forever shrinking, one wonders how long this legal and geographical protection will hold. Madagascar is a country where coup d'états seem to happen with a certain regularity, and concessions to international firms for cutting wood are quick to be signed when money is scarce - as it always is, even if you are not running one of the world's poorest economies. Tourism is ever expanding – Europeans, Americans, Japanese, Russians etc are lining up to push into more and more far and away places, bringing noise, litter, pollution and aggression.

The Masoala peninsula is a potent tonic that serves almost immediate relief from tensions, worries and everyday stress. Just jump into the luke warm waters after a forest walk, or stroll under the lush vegetation lining beaches that are free from litter, listen to the birds and crickets sing in the morning or enjoy the silence when bouldering up a forest river. The mind goes into limbo - I almost immediately lost all sense of time, weekday names became just a fleeting memory. Locals are relaxed, and immensely friendly, nature is abundant and benign - bar the odd cyclone pushing through. “The only problem here is that there is no problem,” says Pierre, the owner of Masoala Forest Lodge, who came to this pristine spot with partner Sandra eight years ago, and makes sea kajaking trips around the peninsula available to those who are willing to put up with little comfort in order to experience nature. “The people here probably don't even know what a problem is.”

Even in Paradise Beauty and Death are closely connected: Mantis on Orchid.

It's hard to grasp – and I hope my own sense of foreboding for the future of this place proves to be just that: a Western incapability to stop worrying about loss.

Madagascar: Tana

I have always held the belief that when it is love, you know it from the first second. This assumption gives some sort of sense to my life, and at the moment it guides my meandering through the streets of Antananarivo, the capitol of that mystic island Madagascar.

Antananarivo: a view of Haute Ville.

The moment I had set my foot on the crumbling asphalt of the minuscule airport, where gangways or busses are non-existant, and felt the warm, lazy breeze bathe me over, I had already taken a liking to the place. Even before, straining through the airplane window, glimpsing the first stretch of ragged coast-line which quickly turned from beach white to lush green to rich African red as we headed inland, and I realized that Madagascar is an endless tapestry of one fantastically eroded hill, ravine, and mountain after the other, I felt beguiled. The ten minutes or so my passport was handed from one official to the next at customs, each one trying to outcompete the friendly smile of his or her predecessor, however, were enough to calm my anxiously thumping heart, relax my hunched shoulders and turn my travel-worn frown into a smile in its own right.

All Tana is a market. Streets are shops.

Tana, as it is commonly (and less tongue twistingly) called, is a dump, there is no denying. But it is a lovely dump, if there be such a thing, a charming chaos full of vibrant colour, the sweet smell of sweat and rot permeating the mountain air, which is cleared from smog by tepid rainfalls evening after evening. Buildings in different stages of decay crumble and are recycled in the shacks growing between colonial palaces, there does not seem to be a distinct line defined by class, colour or cash. And it is inhabited by a people humble and gracious, extremely poor, but apparently content.

Boys taking a break.

If courtesy as a way of life was ever brought to fruition, it is here. The Malagay are so well behaved, that when asked whether they would object to a photograph, they will just regretfully lower their eyes rather than tell you outright that it is against their wish. But I can hardly set one foot before the other, let alone turn a corner without the immediate wish to take a picture. Strange, bemusing or simply captivating images enter the mind in a steady flow.

Goat anyone?

I walk mile after mile without goal, without plan, but the richness of life, the things to see, the lighting up of faces that a simple Bonjour, a casual ca va or even just a nod in passing will provoke driving me out in the streets time after time, even though the knees ache from the steep hills and crooked cobble stone curbs.

Selling fresh fruit.

The distinct wonder I feel at all of this is the sense that I, obviously the filthy rich tourist, feel completely safe even walking alone at night. The chaos of poverty, and hunger, and dreadful sicknesses, that might in other places come with a pronounced threat to the intruder, here somehow is covered with a benign veil. But just when the old legend, that the poor people are the happier, which we like to comfortably flee to when confronted with unbearable living conditions of the slums, sounds inside yourself in apologetic affirmation, there is this boy, maybe four years old, dressed in dirty shreds, cradling his baby sister, sheltering himself in the shadow of a rotting dung heap from the hard sunshine, looking at you with eyes that are bottomless, and you realize that it is just that: a legend.

You are never alone for long.

Scene at Jo'Burg airport

Wide almond eyes overflow with tears, a mouth parts in a silent scream, pearl white very even teeth reflect the neon lights, the face distorted so that at first you cannt decide whether from laughter or pain. An Indian teenage girl, excessively pretty, model-figure, grey high heel boots, holds a delicate hand over her mouth and gazes unbelievingly from father to mother.

The middle-aged woman - once she must have been so beautiful - clutches desperately at her husband, the face dark, unbelieving. The wife buries her head in her hands. His face is a hard, set mask. The temples stone grey, the deepset eyes do not blink. He pats the mother one or two times, then reaches out for his daughter over the small table with the assorted rolls and tea pots. She shies away in disgust, hugs her arms to her chest, looks for comfort from anwhere or anyone in the busy airport cafe. Briefly our gazes meet, but her eyes see nothing, hold nothing, she rests her head briefly against a marble pillar and seems about to faint. There is no sound from this group, even though I am sitting less than five meters away. The steady drone of boarding calls and security announcements and squeaking trolleys blocks it all.

A bizarre scene from an over-acted, over-burdened silent movie. An everyday scene, really, made unreal just by the public display. Did the husband plan his revelation for this occasion so he would have a plane to catch and could smoothly fly away from the wreckage?

A waitress brings my breakfast, yoghurt, fruit, muesli and coffee. The silent wailing, the suffering, the hard staring, it just goes on in that other world across the aisle, there is no relief, no turning point. Finally, the man gets up, there is a final embrace, now the daughter doesn't want to let go. The man disentangels himself and pushes his trolley (three suitcases) to the boarding gate.

I pour sugar in my coffee and take a sip. It's very hot and much too sweet.

Voortrekkers and Heroism: History Lesson in South Africa

It is what must be one of the most ugly buildings in existence: Massive, forbidding, fortress like – neither the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria itself nor the exhibition of the to my mind mostly pathetic art and artifacts it houses really awakes my sympathies for the Boers. But it serves well to exemplify where the challenge lies in feeling South Africa, how identity is shaped by overcoming common challenges – and how important it is to understand that history is always a narrative.

The Monument in all its grotesque splendor. Looks Nazi, feels eerie.

Stopover on my way to Madagascar in Pretoria, South Africa. I am not a good tourist in the way of sightseeing and ticking off the must-sees, but the gigantomanic, tomblike hall erected in memory of the Great Trek, the most important single event to Boer identity, is definitely worth a visit. Located on a hill overlooking South Africa's capitol, it was erected in 1938, and houses not only a coffin-altar unto which the sun only shines once a year at midday in memory of the Battle of Blood River, but also a marble frieze depicting the hardships and plight of some 15,000 Boers who trekked across eastern South Africa in the 1840-50s, after not feeling welcome anymore in the British dominated Cape colony.

Mama Boer knows best.

Facing an unforgiving nature and natives who were strangely and rather aggressively opposed to the taking of their land by the stern bible-clutching Calvinists (in drastic opposition to the strange belief that the land 'was unpopulated', as the Afrikaner story had it) the successful nomadic operation became an event of unifying force – producing martyrs for the cause of Boer independence along the way. Blood and guts, God and martyrs, a shrine – and a common enemy that is easily identified: there you have it, all the ingredients to make up a common myth that still today influences the way many Boers see themselves today.

Is that what happened? Darkies on a hunt for those innocent white Girls.

The feat of conquering Southern Africa's harshest parts is of course heroic – the men and women did prove themselves to be extremely brave. Yet from a modern perspective, one feels a little ashamed of the naive simplicity with which the fight of white against black is portrayed as a figth of good aganist evil, and how the legends woven around it warp historic understanding. Even the accompanying exhibition that is trying to shift weight a little bit to a neutral view-point remains but a foot-note against the racist-religious fervour present throughout the monument – and the reverence for those Voortrekkers shining in the eyes mostly Afrikaner visitors. That you can buy coffee mugs smugly adorned with the old apartheid flag in the adjoining souvenier shop doen't really help that either.

The sarcophagus in the monument. The inscriptopn reads: Ons vir jou Suid Afrika (We [die] for you, South Africa)

All of this points right down to the dominant question of South African identity – how can one feel to be one nation, if the codes of identity are mainly those of opposition? Seeing the cultural differences as a benefit is a message most South Africans may have heard, but whether a majority is experiencing it from the heart, remains doubtful. Afrikaners and Brits share the common beginning of the Union of South Africa after burying the hatchet following their bloody war, at least, and the common profit from apartheid years. But what are unifying events for all South Africans, moments that are remembered as common victories, instead of one ethnicity winning over another? The release of Nelson Mandela may come to mind, but even there minds may differ. And of course winning the Rugby Title of 1995 in their own country, even though the hopeful jubilation of those days for most South Africans seems to have been fading fast in the face of reality. The TRC is hailed from an international perspective as ground-breaking concept for dealing with racial enmitiy and conflicts in one nation. But even though standing role-model for other conflicts on an international level it sems mostly underestimated in its contribution by the majority of South Africans.
The Soccer World Cup 2010 may be another great chance to experience togetherness bar all divisions. Let's wish that it will do what in some ways it has done for Germany in 2006 – releasing, or at least relieving, a nation from a common trauma. Ons vir jou, South Africa - we can't wait.

Pretoria dresses up for 2010.

18 Stunden in Doha

Maldive Fishy Fishes

Some more impressions from the Maldivian shallow depths...

Brown moray. Looks devious, is harmless. Unless in a bad mood.

Swimming with turtles for me is amongst the most magical moments.

What is it like to be part of a school of blue surgeon fish?

Swimming with dolphins: Also nice.

Stripey surgeon feeding frenzy. Amazing.

My Manta

"A big one. And two babies!"
Der schien nicht malsonderlich überrascht. "I say so, this Manta Point. You no believe."

"Manta!" durfte ich also abermals jubeln.

In the line-up with enDo: Surfing Sultans

There are plenty of things one would commonly expect when spending two weeks surfing the Maldives. Sandy beaches and palm trees, mellow waves, coral reefs teeming with life, from the miniscule to the megafish. How refreshing it is then to know that even here, the unexpected does happen. Before the atolls south of Sri Lanka revealed their sundrenched beauty, we had to make do with a week of torrential rain and wind. It didn't stop us from surfing, and it didn't stop the occasional Manta from dropping by either.

A manta is not always as big as a car, but this one was.

The concept of enDo surf trips to the Maldives sounds as exotic as it is sensible: spend two weeks on a live-aboard ship that takes you directly to where the swell hits the reef. Surfing was never made more easy, efficient, or exclusive. Don't bother with braindead resort tourists or pay extra for expensive surf and snorkel trips. The dingy drops you within a paddle stroke of world-famous line-ups, the bathing tub-warm water guarentees you lengthy sessions that are eventually ended by exhaustion, a rumbling stomach, or heat-stroke, whatever comes first.

Yes, I know it doesn't look like a BIG wave from where you are standing, but it was still an awesome ride...

The minute you are out of the water, delicious food awaits. If you're surfed out for the day, why not chill on deck with a good book or a pair of binoculars – for there is plenty to see: Schools of spinner dolphins become such a common sight you barely look up, pilot whales occasionally stick their heads out, fruit bats may hover over you, barracuda make fish jump from their watery element in sprays of silver, and turtles gaze in baffled astonishment at the strange intruders that you are.

Also nice: blacktip reefshark enjoying the surf.
Even when there is no swell, time doesn't get too long. Grab the snorkel gear and explore the underwater world. Even though to my taste the coral reefs of the Red Sea are in much better shape, the sheer plenty of biomass makes your eyes bulge. The whole armada of tropical fish, from Nemo the clown to Bruce the shark, Napoleons, trigger and surgeon fish, puffer and snapper, grouper and moray, you name it, they are all there. And if you are very lucky, a manta might just come out of the deep blue and flap its wings in the line-up for an unforgetful experience.

Who says sunsets are for girls only? All the boys were stunned!

Germanismen V: Zoff im Kofie-shop

Entschuldigung, lasen Sie Kofie-shop?

Was also stimmt an dieser Szene nicht? Richtig. Also dann. Nochmal.

Theater. Ja, Theater. Oder doch lieber ein Copy-shop? Ja, viel besser. Naßkalt, Schultern hoch, Copy-shop.

Ich also rein, mein Buch vervielfältigen lassen.

Ja ich bräuchte – hier... ja danke, halten Sie mal....hier, also. 346 Seiten als Buch bitte.

Ah...ja, also dann wollen wir mal sch-

Ich weiß schon. Hier drücken. Und da, und ach, Scheise. Was... was ist jetzt?

Der Drucker druckt.

Das seh ich, daß der Drucker druckt. Aber warum?

Warum? Na du hast gedrückt Drucken, also druckt.

Hä? Ich... hab gar nicht... Scheise.

Ja. Scheise.

Ulf, also bitte!

Na gut, jedenfalls Männerstress.

Wir wenden uns wortlos voneinander ab.

Also wie jetzt. Ende oder was.

Also, ich mach mal jetzt, ja?

Null Plan, merkt man sofort.

Germanismen IV: Schizophrene AOK Sachbearbeiter

Herr Teufelweich schien verwundert.

Germanismen I: Wesserbisser

Salaam Surfing: In the lineup with enDo

This world holds adventure for the traveler, and the open minded will find a lot of good things still come for free. In many destinations, however, relaxation has become an organized business - where more often than not the critical customer cannot help feeling milked or finds local customs twisted and perverted to suit the taste of the lobotomized. Thus it came as great relief to find that the concept behind enDo surf camp in Morocco is definetely opposed to the superficial: Here, one has the feeling that it's all about the love for surfing, rather than making a buck.

enDo teamers demonstrate a breach of surfing etiquette:
It's always 'Ladies first', of course.

The Moroccan September sun glazes the sleepy town of Tamraght in warm colours. I strain to look into the setting sun, the waves coming in directly from the west. It's a slow late afternoon session, there is a gentle 2 foot swell just right for me to practice my take offs. I am the only surfer in the water, and have plenty of time to let my thoughts go with the flow. The muezzin calls to end the fast as the sun disappears in the ocean. I catch a last wave in. Two local boys wave to me with a mixture of excitement and bashness and I give them my board for a brief spell in the whitewater.

Tourism is not really big thing in Tamraght, a few miles up the coast from Agadir. Four surf camps exist in the area, nicheing in between everyday regional businesses and private homes. Except for water sports, there is not much exploitable toursim activity in the viccintiy. A trip to Agadir and Essaouira, a visit to the local market, a short hike up the mountian or a bike ride along the beach are the only available pasttimes, a fact that will not bother the regular enDo guest, where the declared focus is surfing, surfing, and surfing. Several great spots are in walking distance, Banana Point regularly pitches nice swells a mere stone's throw from the door step, slabs like Boilers and Killers are a short drive away.

Just playing in the foamies: enDo teamers having fun at the housebeach.

enDo was brought into existence in this spot ten years ago by two young surfers looking for a way to combine their sport with making a living. Camp philosophy is a mix of offering the grit of an individual surfari while incorporating respect for local traditions and idiosyncrasies with the carefreeness of hanging out at a friend's house. In fact, three weeks of surfing with enDo felt to me more like living in digs with incredibly sportive housemates – and an expert cook. Loosing weight is definetley not an objective when confronted with delicious breakfasts and local dinners - and perhaps one or two burgers thrown in for lunch.

The still extremely affordable prices of the camp are part of the agenda and are made possible only by the teamer system, where staff work basically for food and lodging and a little else – a perfect job for students or drifters. Thus, there ist no shortage in stoked surfers who welcome the arrangement to make their own dream of a prolonged surf time-out reality in return for passsing on knowledge, arranging transport and an occasional cocktail evening. Customers are drawn from all ranges of expertise, from surf pro to grommet, but no matter what your skill level, instruction is tailor made and precise. Regular video feedback sessions help tremendously in acknowledging one's potential for improvement. Yet there are no alures of aloofness from those more experienced. The best surfer is still the one who leaves the water with the biggest smile.

It's a fact that the more you talk about surfing, the more ridiculous you sound – which does not stop conversations on the roof terrasse revolving around swell, board shapes and surf stories. „My first time surfing was a life-changing experience“, says an enDo executive otherwise completely alien to pathos. „I realized that the things that were so important to me before, like cars, job money, career, simpy lost their relevance. Now the prime objective is to spend at least a few months surfing each year. I may make less money now, but my life is the richer for it.“ I nod and exhale slowly. What would sound like a cheesy surf dude's mantra at home in our organized and clockworked society makes complete sense in the warm afterglow of a surfing session and a belly full of delicious tagine. The muezzin is at it again, his rival answers the call from the next hilltop. There will be waves tomorrow, insha'Allah.
